Realms and rulesets

In WoW Forever you don't pick a realm. You choose a ruleset on your first login and play with others on the same ruleset.[1]

Available rulesets

Four at launch; Hardcore arrives after launch.

  • Normal

    Focus on adventuring and fighting monsters; you fight other players only when you choose to.[1]

  • PvP

    You're almost always at risk of attack from the opposing faction out in the world. You can only create characters for one faction.[1][2]

  • Roleplay

    For roleplayers, with strict naming conventions and behavior rules.[1]

  • Roleplay PvP

    Roleplay rules plus player-versus-player combat. Added in time for launch.[3][4]

  • Hardcore

    After launch

    The ultimate challenge, where death carries lasting consequences. Planned for after launch.[1][5]

Rules to know

  • Parties, guilds, dungeons and raids only work within the same ruleset and faction. Battlegrounds can include players from other rulesets (except Hardcore).[1][4]
  • A ruleset isn't a single server. Blizzard says it's not one giant realm for everyone, and you can't group across rulesets.[6]
  • You can't hop freely between rulesets: to play on another one, create a new character there. A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset.[1][2]
  • Collections and Legacy Points are shared account-wide across rulesets. Hardcore progress carries over to other rulesets, but not the other way around.[1]
  • On Normal, Roleplay and Hardcore you can create characters for both factions. On the PvP rulesets, new character creation can be temporarily limited for one faction when the populations need balancing.[2]
  • Set a “Preferred Online Language” (Esc → Options → System → Languages and Social) to meet players who chose the same language. It's account-wide and has a 24-hour cooldown.[1]

As soon as WoW Forever connection info shows up in Battle.net game data, it appears here. Checked every minute.
